It's that time of the year again: final exams.
We all have them, we all hate them. Yet, we all need to pass. For weeks, we don't leave our rooms -usually looking like a small garbage dump with numerous empty water bottles, dirty clothes on the floor and papers all over the desk- except to get some food, wearing the comfiest clothes we could find (baggy T-shirts and loose sweatpants), looking like we haven't slept for years. Highly distracted by every kind of technical device, we try to stuff every page of our textbooks in our minds, hoping we won't forget it the day of the exam. But of course, mom, dad, everything is going fine. I'm the best student in the world, don't you know?
Instagram overflows with pictures of wonderful holidays -leaving the throwback thursday behind, because during this period every day is a nostalgic one-, countdowns and piles of books. Facebook is filled with nonsense we all -for an unexplainable reason- find funny and Twitter seems to be the new Wailing Wall. And yes, I'm guilty of all.
We ache for parties with good music, friends and drinks. We ache for sleeping till noon, spending lazy days in the sun and having nothing to worry about. We ache for holiday.
As I see it, you have 3 different types of students in every class. The well-prepared ones, the bon-vivants-yet-motivated ones and the ultimate procrastinators.
The well-prepared ones are usually people with a lot of self-discipline. They're the students who attend every class, make efficient notes and listen carefully to every word that comes out of the lectures' mouth. They have nothing to worry about because they've reviewed their lessons during the year, made well-filled summaries and highlighted the important subjects in their books. All they have to do is revise, revise and revise. And of course, don't forget to stress out the night before the exam because 'they are certainly going to fail', knowing they are going to pass without any doubt.
The bon-vivants-yet-motivated-ones start the semester with good intentions, ready to skip none of the classes and make summaries. Yet, life is more exciting than school, so they easily relapse in their old habits and sometimes forget about schoolwork. They go out a lot, enjoy the sunny days, make the weekends worthwhile and don't wait for the holidays to have the time of their lives. However, they are responsible and attend the classes they think are the most important ones, listen to what is said and take notes when they feel they have to. Because if they weren't there to pay attention, they could as well be doing something more joyful than sitting in class. As finals are coming, they try to gather all the necessary information and make sure they have summaries -selfmade or exchanged with classmates-. During the exams, they study hard to compensate all the time they were doing something else during the semester. If they're unlucky, they'll have one or two resits but normally, they'll pass too.
The ultimate procrastinators can be divided in two smaller groups. The ones who pretend they aren't and the ones who are totally open about it. The first ones attend almost every class, but don't take any notes. They spend all the time on their phones and giggling with their friends, highly frustrating the other students. The second ones almost never attend classes, never know what the assignments are about and have no idea whether or not they need that specific book for that specific lecture. Both are unbelievably unprepared for the finals. They have no summaries, no notes, no highlighted sentences in their books. If they are lucky, they get some of their colleagues, but usually they find themselves lost in the pile of books and presentations they need to learn. The day before the exam. Some of them will pass after the resits, others will give up. Either way, we all know it was their own fault.
I think I'm more the second type. I enjoy life at its' fullest, but know when I have to stop. Yes, I'm a procrastinator, but a responsible one. And I'm a perfectionist at the same time, which sometimes makes it really long nights, but it's always worth it in the end. So, this time isn't any different. I enjoyed my semester, nevertheless I'm studying hard now, because my ultimate goal is having no resits, and I truly hope I'll succeed.
As I already mentioned, we all need to pass, so this period is inevitable. All we can do is trying to survive it and, when it's over, enjoy every second of summer. Good luck to y'all!
